The Race For City Council Ward I
City Ward Map
Jan Brown is facing her toughest campaign since she was first
elected to Loveland’s City Council on November 2, 1999.
She spent much of her introduction and later answers to questions
defending the actions of the City Council.  In response to one
question she simply stated, “I am not going to talk about
McWhinney.

Cecil Gutierrez stated in his introduction that he is running to
represent the citizens of Loveland instead of special interests.  â
€œI will be an independent voice on the Council not beholden to
special interests…and not dependent on information only from
applicants.

Gutierrez talked about knocking on doors and raised a number of
concerns voiced to him by residents of Loveland’s Ward I.
Among those concerns were traffic, poorly designed city bus
service and the impact of sprawl on the community.  Gutierrez
talked about the need for light rail transportation and other
solutions to alleviate traffic.

Jan Brown said she first ran for Council over concerns regarding
declining business in downtown Loveland.  She described herself
as a former business owner (message shop) and said the Council
recently took action to help downtown Loveland.

Gutierrez commented, “Growth needs to be natural not
sprawl.  We have manufactured growth through bringing retail
sales before jobs.â€  He commented that he believed it is short
sighted to rely on retail sales tax for over 80% of the city’s
budget and stated he would work to bring primary jobs to
Loveland.  He stated, “We have manufactured growth that is
causing sprawl.

Brown spoke against campaign finance reform for Loveland and
defended the secret meetings held by Loveland’s City
Council to discuss McWhinney’s proposal that taxpayerâ
€™s bankroll the trolley ride for his newly proposed Grand
Station development.  Gutierrez stated he preferred open and
transparent local government and vowed to do everything he
could to keep the public’s business in the public.

Brown used typical government-speak regarding forming
committees for downtown advocacy and talked about the
committees she serves on for the city.  Brown also said, “I
believe this Council has supported churches, schools, libraries etcâ
€¦.

Mayoral candidate Troy Krenning appeared to take a swipe at
Brown or at least distance himself from her by saying the town
has already had too many special committees, advocacy groups
and the like for downtown.  Instead, Krenning promised more
direct action if he were elected Mayor.

"I am not going to talk

"I will be an independent voice on the
Council not beholden to special
interests."
"I am trying to stay with it since people
think its important. I think we need to think
about this some more before voting."
