League of Woman Voters Candidate Forum Loveland City Hall, October 4, 2007
|
Loveland’s first candidate forum this election cycle was punctuated with two
interruptions, strong accusations and weak rebuttals. The lines were clearly drawn between
those who want to protect the status quo (mostly the incumbents) and those who are running
to make a change.
Certain themes were also present throughout the evening by certain candidates in their
responses. Mayor Pro Tem Gene Pielin, candidate for Mayor, responded to the question
about the role of the mayor and also the campaign finance reform initiative by belittling
Loveland's residents. He said most people don't understand how the City Council works
and complained that most people who want campaign finance reform have likely not even
read the initiative.
Troy Krenning, another candidate for Mayor, described both himself and the role of
Loveland's Mayor as a "cheerleader" role. The self-described "cheerleader" also referred to
current senior city staff almost as diety. He said the City Manager, Don Williams, is doing an
excellent job and in response to another candidate questioning the City Council meeting in
closed session to discuss McWhinney's proposal for a taxpayer funded trolley stated, "I think
the City Attorney is beyond reproach."
The forum, hosted by the League of Woman Voters, began with an interruption by an
unidentified member of the audience demanding they say the pledge of allegiance before
starting the event. The moderator, at first objected but quickly acquiesced when the
candidates all nodded in agreement to saying the pledge of allegiance.
Seated on the far left-end of the City Council dais were the three mayoral candidates, Troy
Krenning, Gene Pielin and Ken Morey. To their right, the candidates for City Council were
seated in order of the ward they are running to represent. See how they split on the issues.
Each candidate was asked to provide an introduction and than general questions were asked
to the mayoral and later council candidates. No specific question was asked to any one
candidates and no rebuttal time was provided.
The second interruption of the evening came as Loveland’s Mayor Pro Tem, Gene
Pielin, interrupted the closing comments of City Council candidate Kent Solt. Solt pointed to
the fact his opponent only attended 23% of Loveland’s City Council’s study
sessions and Pielin quickly interrupted by saying the comments were not appropriate for the
forum. The moderator acquiesced to Pielin’s demands and allowed incumbent City
Council candidate Steve Dozier to provide a response. None of the other candidates,
including Solt, were provided time for rebuttals.
