Statement By Joseph Hertwig Candidate for Loveland City Council - Ward 3
|
Since announcing my candidacy for the city council of Loveland, I have been asked many questions. Why are you running? I
will get to that shortly. What is the role of the city council for downtown redevelopment? Do you support the lodging tax and
what should we do with the money? For the record, no, this leaves the rest of the question moot. What are you going to do
about the garbage in the field next door??? And many more, now you have 90 seconds to answer...ready...GO!
These are all legitimate questions and deserve answers to one degree or another. However, the most important question has
yet to be asked. That is, what do you think is the proper role of government? Government, whether it is local, state or federal,
has two and only two basic responsibilities. First is to protect the people. Police, fire and rescue, (for state and federal this
would include national guard and the military). Second, to build and maintain infrastructure. The roads, power, water, sewer,
etc. Everything else is extra and up for debate. I don’t believe that most people want the government telling them how to live
their lives. How much soda to drink, what kind of car to drive, which doctor to go to, how and what you teach your children.
For the most part people just want to be left alone by the government. I have seen this while going through the neighborhoods
with my little flyers. I am either ignored or looked upon with suspicion. I also get the occasional friendly ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’.
Then there are those that look at me like something they just scraped off their shoe. I can relate to all the above, I have felt the
same at one point or another. Why is this? Like I said, people just want to be left alone by the government. They don’t want to
be “social engineered”.
Now for the pressing question, “why are you running?” I am running for city council to leave you alone. To make sure you have
adequate police, fire fighters and ambulances so you feel safe. To make sure you have clean drinking water so your coffee
tastes good. To make sure your roads are smooth and clear so you don’t spill your coffee on the way to work or play. To
make it easier for business to operate here so we have the jobs that provide the pay that give us the tax base to provide the
police, pave the roads, to make the water flow. To provide you, and yes me, with an environment where we can live our lives
as we, the people, see fit, not some faceless government bureaucrat or pompous, pretentious know-it-all out to make the
world as they see fit. I will be that voice that says...no. No to higher taxes, no to higher “fees” (just another tax), no to more
needless regulation. And when someone asks the city for money, I will ask what do we get for the investment and how are you
going to protect and guarantee that investment? And if necessary, to just say...no.
I do not and will not hide what I stand for and what I believe nor will I tell you what I think you
want to hear. I can only speak the truth.
