Over 163,000 voters in Larimer County cast ballots in November’s election but just under 10,000 ballots cast were only for the presidential ticket while approximately 15,000 voters decided not to vote in the Larimer County Commissioner’s races. About 16,000 new and younger voters asked for absentee ballots in Ft. Collins.
It is typical to see the highest profile offices on the top of the ballot receive the greatest number of votes while the further one goes down the ballot the less number of votes are recorded as some impatient voters don’t bother to completely fill-in their ballots. However, the massive surge in registration since last July (40,000 in Larimer County) meant a larger number of younger more liberal voters from CSU participated in the election than ever before in Larimer County elections thus greatly skewing the results.
Do you believe the 25,000 students at CSU will continue to make an impact in Larimer County or was this a one-time surge for Obama’s campaign?
Voters chose change. Obama campaigned on it, and Markey represented it over the conservative, traditional Musgrave. Now we’ll see if they like the change they’ve ushered in. I fear that some of the college students that wanted change may want another kind of change, once they have to get a job and pay taxes.
Thanks, this is a very interesting article. Our daughter who attends CSU was approached many times (even by her instructors) to vote for Obama. The CSU campus has become nothing but a huge Democrat recruiting ground for students who know very little about the election.
Here is our problem in Larimer County, the new majority of the democrats will be used to abuse their power by doing even more to utilize union workers, teacher unions and unsuspecting students to support them in future elections. It will not be a question of the messages since the Republican message will be censored at these same places.

I am wondering why someone using Loveland’s Chamber of Commerce website is trashing Democrats? At least legally you are supposed to be nonpartisan given your tax status.
People are tired of the Republicans in this county. It really isn’t complicated. They are corrupt and care only about forcing even more development no matter how it impacts our environment, long-term economy and way of life.
Too bad the county commissioner candidates fooled people into thinking they were independent.
